Caribbean Stud Poker Strategies

There are a lot of different Caribbean stud poker strategies out there such as the Beacon Hand Strategy, the Matching Rank Strategy and the blind bet strategy. If you visit a casino and talk to players it might seem like every player has their own strategy. All Caribbean stud strategies are based around when to bet and when to fold. Some strategies also take the jackpot into consideration. There is no strategy that allows you to remove the banks edge and no secret trick that can give you an edge such as counting cards can in black jack. No matter how well you play that casino will always have the statistical upper hand. Based on the 19,933,230,517,200 possible five-card poker hands it is however possible to calculate the optimal possible strategy to use when playing. The strategy that will reduce the banks edge the most. This optimal strategy, called the three rule strategy is very easy to learn and follow. If you use it you will reduce the banks true advantage to 2.554%

Three Rule Strategy:

  • Raise if the dealer’s exposed card is equal rank to any card in your hand ranked from Two thru Queen.
  • Raise if the dealer’s exposed card is an Ace or Queen, and you are holding either a Queen or Jack.
  • Raise if the dealer’s exposed card does not equal any card you are holding and is a lower rank than your fourth highest ranked card.

If you think the three rule strategy is to complicated there are other strategies that are easier that gives the bank only a very slightly higher edge. You can as an example use the Beacon Hand Strategy that gives the bank a 2.596% true advantage. The Beacon hand strategy dictates that you should raise if you are holding a Three, Eight, Jack, King, Ace combination or better. If not you should fold. Another strategy you can use is the Matching Rank Strategy which give the bank an 2.616% edge. This strategy is very simple and simple dictates that you should raise if the dealer’s exposed card is an equal rank to any of your cards. If you want a very easy strategy you can raise whenever you hold Ace/king or better. This strategy give the bank an 2.672% edge. If you only raise on pairs the banks edge will be 2.738%.

The so called blind strategy should never be used as that gives the bank a more than 5% true advantaged. You should never try to bluff and play a hand if you do not have anything in Caribbean stud poker.

Below you can see a table of different strategies and the edge they offer the bank.
